What is the #1 interview mistake?

You landed the interview, your ready. You have done your homework and you think that your exactly what they are looking for. You know all about the company, you know what they have to offer, you know that you mesh well and would be a fantastic add. Suit on....check. Extra resume's......check. Your early....check.

Times have certainly changed when it comes to interviewing practices, both on the part of the employer and the candidate. I certainly fall into the category of the etiquette from the past. I wouldn't even consider wearing jeans or chino's to an interview, I am always in a Suit thank you very much. I have always decided where I wanted to work first and certainly not just randomly applying to places just to get a job. I take my time, trying to investigate if we would make a good fit. However, in today's ever growing youth, the lax attitude and disrespect means that gone are the days when you were prompt, you were dressed and wanted a career and merely not a job.

But what do you do when the interview is over? You have made an incredible first impression. You have answered the questions all correctly in your opinion, you have a great rapport with the interviewer and you think you nailed the interview. Now all I have to do is merely wait for the call and I am hired.
WRONG!!! What you do in these next crucial first 24 hrs is really going to set you apart from everyone else. WRITE THE THANK YOU LETTER!! Whether you have successfully spent the last 40 minutes meeting in their offices or you are halfway around the world and have used today's technologies of a Skype interview, or, like so many companies are doing first, the covenanted telephone interview, WRITE THE THANK YOU LETTER.

You don't have to write a love letter, a quick e-mail will do, doesn't have to be involved, the truth is, the shorter the better. Just thank them. They took time you desperately needed and you need to show your appreciation. Sometimes, all it takes to get you to the top of the pile is a few sentences. The interviewer will think you are:

  • Not interested in the job
  • Disorganized and forgot all about doing it
  • There is a huge chance you will be forgotten
You have put so much into this, take a few moments and create some magic, you never know what a little appreciation can do.

5 things successful people do differently than the rest

Every wonder what Oprah, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and so many millions of others do so differently than you? The answers may surprise you, they are certainly not BORN with it, they merely do things differently.

Oprah

Bill Gates

Here's a top 5 list of things they do differently and you might want to write them down:

  1. GET SPECIFIC- When setting a goal, be as specific as possible. Generalization is weak. You need a clear picture and idea in your head. This will not only keep you motivated but allows you to see exactly what it is you want to succeed.
  2. ACT ON YOUR GOALS- Funny when we set goals, we get so wrapped around everything else and the business of life that when we get the opportunity to act on one, we let it slip through. Achieving those goals means seizing the opportunities before they disappear. Give yourself actual TIME. Time Management is a fantastic way to set aside time each week dedicated specifically to your goals. You will accomplish so much when you have the time set aside and you will feel incredible when you start checking those items off your list.
  3.  BE A REALISTIC OPTIMIST- Look, everyone thinks they will succeed in all they do and don't get me wrong, there are those of you that actually will. Let's get real though, you set goals, HUGE goals, never underestimate how truly difficult it may be to reach them. Most goals that are truly worth reaching take time. They take persistence & planning.
  4. SHOW TRUE GRIT- Persistence, willingness to commit to the long term. Grit shows who is "in it to win it" and who is not. Studies have shown that military provide a grueling first year to truly see who has what it takes, who will tough it out and finish through. And if you think you don't have it, ensuring that the planning, persistence and effort are all things that can give you alittle. Remember, the obstacles you face really make you realize how badly you really want it in the first place. If it was worth the fight and sacrifice, than it was worth fighting for.
  5. FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WILL DO- Focused on quitting smoking or loosing weight? Then start planning on replacing bad habits with the great ones. Researchers have shown that focusing on something you DON'T WANT really makes you focus on that. When your out of work and searching for a job, you are only worrying about finding a job, not having money, etc. If you want a better job, more money, that house, that vacation you have always dream of, then start MAKING IT HAPPEN. Visualization may sound like that crazy, mumbo jumbo for spiritualists but I assure you, every single person who ever wanted something had a dream.
Do you read this list and think, WHOA......I am not any of those things, or do you read this list and think, I AM all of those things? The difference between those successful people and you are not so different if you break it down. And, on a personal note, one man, who in the days up till his death, fought and struggled like most of us with how to become successful and he has taught me more about succeeding than anyone could: Walt Disney. "If you can dream it, you can do it". Simple words, but if you have your goals and dreams in mind, see them, live them, breath them. Dreams do come true, just ask Walt.

5 reasons I love staying at a Hotel

I know that people who travel for a living might be disagreeing with me here but I love staying in a Hotel. Now, I am not talking the low budget, we have been driving for 15 hours from Canada and we are trying to get to Florida for faction. I am talking we have made it, the drive is over and we are checking in!! Sure, your tired, but gosh it's gonna be over as soon as I check in.

  1. Checking in with fantastic Guest Service Agents- Nothing makes arriving at your destination that seeing a smiling face and feeling welcomed. Genuine, caring and authentic is what I am looking for. Not forced and fake.
  2. Getting an UPGRADE when you never expected it- This is one of the best feelings in the world, almost like winning the lottery because you HAVE. All I requested when I booked was a King Non-Smoking room. Overbooked and now I have a SUITE. One word- WINNING!!
  3. Being pampered- Everyone needs to feel important and staying in a Hotel means I can feel that. Having a Bellman bring up my bags for a small amount of a tip means I look like I HAVE more money than I really do but I deserve it, I AM ON VACATION BABY!!
  4. Room Service- Yes, it's expensive, I mean $25-$30 for 2 eggs and some toast and a tea? REALLY? But for one moment, one AWESOME moment, I am felt to feel like a star. I can stay in my comfy robe and escort the In-Room Dining Delivery person into your Suite and relax and enjoy your super expensive feast.
  5. TIME TO EXPLORE- You know, right at this exact moment I am on VACATION. I can wake whenever I like, I get to explore my new surroundings, learn about new Cultures, and see new people.

The only 3 questions that top Executive Recruiters agree should be asked during interview

Can you imagine only 3 questions being asked? What happened to the old stand by's like where do you see yourself in ten years? What is your greatest weakness?
Today, 2012 we are being forced to fight for less and less jobs in the Hospitality market and you have to bring something exciting to the table but THREE QUESTIONS?
This is brilliant. In an article published in Forbes Magazine, the only three questions that recruiters agree are the most important are:
1. Can you do the job?
2. Will you love the job?
3. can we tolerate working with you?
Now, I assure you that the first two are basic and that should be given, but the last, I find the most important in my opinion. What type of FIT are you and will you in fact fit with us? When applying for jobs, we should in fact also be interviewing THEM, potential companies. Sure, this is also a stressful thought considering your fighting to pay your rent and put food on your table so why should I get crazy and start trying to interview them? I NEED A JOB!!
Ok, slow down, it is extremely important that you investigate the companies you are inquiring about. Start by turning on that computer your playing games on and start reading. What is their Mission Statement? Does it conform to your beliefs? If it doesn't say ANYTHING to you, then perhaps you might want to skip them and go to someone else because if you can't stand them now, you might be fighting for years convincing yourself you love them. Do they offer things you believe in? Are the benefits exactly what you need? Is there room for growth? Are they growing as a company?
Start looking at the company's BRAVE and see if is what you stand for. What is BRAVE you ask?
B- Behavior's
R- Relationship's
A- Attitude's
V- Value's
E- Environment

These things will prepare you, along with your experiences and skills to ensure that your a perfect fit. Now......go out there and show em what you got!!

Don't Confuse Passion with Competence - Scott Anthony - Harvard Business Review

This is a brilliant article by Scott Anthony who just re-iterates my message in regards to having passion in the Hospitality industry

Don't Confuse Passion with Competence - Scott Anthony - Harvard Business Review

If you don't take care of your guests, someone else will

I have believed in Guest Relations for many years. The mere act of speaking to people can be daunting for many, it comes very easily to me, that doesn't mean you can learn how to get yourself out there. You can be taught many things, but a genuine love for your guests, comes from somewhere you can't be taught.
I have a passion for making people happy, ensuring all their needs are met and actually, going above and beyond is truly what I live for. It gives me so much joy to see the smiling faces, the pleasure in doing something for others, not because I had to either, because I enjoy it.
For some, the paycheck is the bottom line, for me, it's the simple gratitude I get at the end of a long vacation, a business trip, whatever it may be. You may have been visiting for the very first time, you may return here once a month, makes no difference to me.
Let me share a story with you, about a time not so long ago when I had the incredible opportunity to work for a Magical Place. We were chosen to work there. It took a very long time to get there too. Telephone interviews, face to face interviews with groups of others fighting for the same exact spot I wanted to have, paper work and more paper work. In the end, you never remember how you got there, just that you were.
It gave me so much pleasure to walk across that promenade everyday that it literally brought tears to my eyes most days. My fellow cast members that were walking with me would often glare at me to see if today was another day they would see tears streaming down my face as I happily walked from the parking lot to my location. I was totally in the moment. I knew that I had the ability to take of people that day and I took it seriously. It was often an out of body experience. Sure, I can see you scoff at me now, but I have truly found something I love to do and I don't find it to be work, but a fun place where I can help others.
Back to the story, this day, I was working in the restaurant as a seater. This task was one of many on the road to becoming a server. You see, at Walt Disney World, there is so much training involved when you take over a role, you have to work your way up, learning and growing as you go to ensure they are putting the very best person in that role and not just anyone. When your serving, you have a popcorn cart you start off at, get yourself into the door to greeter, seater, food runner, buser and so on until that one magical day when you become a full fledged server.
So, when your seating people, you are literally taking the guests to their tables when they are ready inside. Now, generally, people don't like to talk to people that they don't know, but I am the exact opposite. I LOVE IT! I love getting guests stories, where they come from, what they are doing whilst they are visiting, what they do for a living and so on. You see, this give me the optimal opportunity to go ABOVE AND BEYOND for my guests. I can literally find things out, Birthday, Anniversary, family reunion and can act accordingly. So, as you take the walk into the dining room, I am creating a rapport with my guests. You could often find me even laying on the floor playing with children as they waited for tables, singing and dancing with little ones to amuse them whilst they waited.
Kelsey was 6 at the time of their visit and she was visiting with her parents Linda & Mark who were from Long Island NY. Kelsey is a brilliant young girl, smarter than most and somewhat privileged as some would call her. This wasn't her first visit to Disney and certainly not her last but for this visit, it would change both our lives.
Kelsey and her parents were; as most families did, patiently waiting for their name to be called to go and be seated and eat their dinner. When they arrived, they were behind in the dining room, about 20 minutes so now, as a greeter and seater, you have to come up with some unique ways to entertain these guests as they waited. We have a plethora of things at the Canadian Le Cellier Restaurant to do, Canadian trivia, coloring pages, games and a handful of things we created as we worked. It was fun for everyone most times although there are those guests out there that are CERTAINLY NOT there for games and just want to eat, but that my friends, is an entirely different post.
Kelsey and I had an instant connection, a bond and we managed to end up sitting on the floor coloring and singing songs from her favorite Disney movies whilst we pasted the time. I chatted with her parents when I could, Kelsey was an attention grabber to say the least. We spend 20 minutes or so getting to know each other and when their name was finally called, I walked them down into the dining room and wished them well. Normally that would be the end of the story, however sometimes, certainly people take a shining to others and THAT my friends is where the magic lives ;)

Now, there is way more to the story, but the most important part is that I was 100% and beyond taking care of these guests, and if I hadn't have done that, I would not still be contacting my friend Kelsey and knowing that at age 10 she is now show jumping horses and what bands she likes.
I admit I am certainly not the norm, but when you have people like myself working for you, these guests return time and time again, your revenue increases and maybe, just maybe, you meet lifelong friends and create memories that last a lifetime.

Where the magic lives

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of being accepted into the Walt Disney World Cultural Rep. Program. This is what Hospitality is all about.
Walt Disney once wrote- "you can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it takes people to make the dream a reality".
An inspirational quote for those of us in the field.....promising news for someone who really knew what he was talking about.
Now, years after his death, Walt's dream continues to live. The promise to create a place where kids and adults could come and be as one.

People could certainly learn a thing or two from this company that has withstood the tests of time. They have done some incredible things in the industry, they have failed, but they have always come back stronger than ever. With cast members like these and so many hundreds of thousands around the world (last count Walt Disney World alone using over 65,000 people) magic can certainly happen when you love what you do.

THIS is what Excellence in Service is all about

Becoming noticed

I have found over the last 4 months or so that times have changed so much in the wonderful world of job hunting. Studies have been showing this for years but the trends of today are certainly going to be gone tomorrow and fast.
Personal Branding, Keywords, ensuring you are getting yourself out there......scary to even think about the possibilities, they seem endless. Who's right?
A quick example, I have been reinventing my outdated resume now for the last 3 months officially and I have been asking all my friends, acquaintances and basically anyone I know for assistance and everyone certainly has an option. I had the fortune however of having an HR Recruiter who specializes in resumes offer to take a look and she would critique it and send me her comments. To be very honest, it is very difficult to hear something back about yourself, something you have done, something you have not done and struggling to find your self confidence during this crucial time is very exasperating to say the very least. It is hard to have someone you have never met tell you in a matter of words, you SUCK!
That's not to say you didn't want the assistance, it's just that you weren't ready for everything to be dumped on you all at once.
So, you suck it up, grab a backbone and forge ahead. Re-writing and re-writing, spell checking, searching for the "KEYWORDS".......include the facts, leave out the fiction......so much has changed.

How do you become noticed? In each field of employment, there is competition and especially in today's economic crisis which we don't have to be reminded of daily, we find ourselves fighting in a war with one another. Find ways of getting noticed, putting yourself at the top of the pile.......all without sounding like a well........DB. Toot your own horn but don't sound conceded, ensure that these companies know that your exactly why they are looking for.
Creative wizards can certainly excel here but for those of us, regular Joe's like myself, how do we do that? Well, you have been inundated I am sure with the usual promises from the SPAM LIKE websites promising to put you in the TOP OF THE PILE, will completely re-write your resume and cover letter to make you look like the superstar you really are...........only for $600. WOW........didn't they hear me....I am currently UNEMPLOYED.....NOT MAKING ANY MONEY HERE!!

Trying to weed through the hype and the fact and fiction can certainly be daunting enough to make you crawl back into your comfy bed and hide, or fall back into the fetal position on the floor and suck your thumb and pray if you close your eyes, it will all go away. However, this is the exact time you have to turn to your friends and the experts for some sound advice and hopefully some assistance.
There are some fantastic websites out there that are specifically designed to help you with your fight. To get you out there, to ensure you are becoming noticed.
I for one believe that some focus and some small changes can truly make the biggest difference. Stay positive, ensure you have a fantastic support system around you for those grey days when you don't feel as though your situation is ever gonna change and take one step at a time.

Now, if you will excuse me, my Linkedin profile needs to be updated AGAIN and I have a few sites I need to go look at to ensure I myself are becoming noticed.

Welcome

Welcome to the beginning of our journey. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Tracey and I have a passion for Hospitality. I have been in the industry, literally since I was a young girl and never recognized it till recently. You see, my grandparents owned a very popular restaurant in Ontario for many years. People would come from far and wide to visit. Tantalizing food, incredible service and friendly faces made the joint something extra special. That's where my story begins. My family spent years turning customers moments into memories. As it turns out, I was witness to it my entire youth. I was wondering around talking to guests when I was still in diapers.
Fast forward to High School, my guidance counsellors would ask: "Tracey, what do you want to be when you grow up?".......and I have continued to ask myself that question daily even now in my.....well let's just say I'm certainly NOT in High School any longer. ;)
The definition of Hospitality in the Oxford Dictionary is as follows: " the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors or strangers." Ultimately I am an Entertainer. One who takes care of others.

I have learnt from the best, my family, and another very important family in the Hospitality World....DISNEY.
Join me in discussion, banter and views of the world that is, HOSPITALITY and all it encompasses.
I welcome your feedback and comments.
